Past Spring Break
The last few weeks have driven us to find new methods to reduce frustration in Asmund. We're exploring some charts and ideas for self determination within a set routine.
We began Math U See today, and for all his protests before the fact, Asmund is in love. This style seems to suit him well.
We began our new history unit with Crash Course talk on Thomas Jefferson. We'll spend the rest of the year on Lewis and Clark, and bring maps, geography, plant identification, and northwest Native American tribes into the unit.

Wystan is a month into ukulele lessons and enjoying it.

Black History Month
2/7/17
History
We've done what we're going to do regarding the Revolutionary War. We've ended with talk of the freedom of the colonies and the continuing evil of slavery. That's a decent introduction to Black History month.
One of the last Liberty's Kids was about Mum Bett, a slave who took her master to court in 1781, sued for her freedom, and won. We referenced that story while talking about this poem, about the American dream vs American reality.
Asmund's thoughts on Langston Hughes:
"Oh, so that's why he wrote all those poems like jazz? Well, you can't change people's color but you can change people's minds."

Math
We're using Kahn right now. Asmund is starting multiplication. We're running into difficulty in that the quizes involve more reading, which he can't do, so that's much more time consuming for me.

New semester
We're beginning formal spelling for both Asmund and Wystan this spring, focusing on word families. They're both doing well reading, and Asmund is enjoying writing letters and journaling.
http://www.hubbardscupboard.org/word-families/#am
We're finishing up a look at the Revolutionary War period this spring. Next fall I'd like to start with Lewis and Clark, and do a long section on that journey, incorporating states and geography.
Asmund is finally having carryover with his "s" and "z" sounds.

Catching up
Whew, this last month has been a doozy.
Reading
Wystan is becoming a more confident reader. It seems to depend on the day with Asmund. :/
Asmund and I just finished reading Beowulf. We chose the Michael Morpurgo/Michael Foreman edition. We're also reading Geronimo Stilton.
History
We're continuing with our Revolutionary War studies. I've been impressed with Liberty's Kids. I didn't expect the show to include so much nuance or ethical tension.
Today we read Paul Revere's Ride, by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, and we're starting the American Girl Felicity series.
Math
Perimeter of a polygon and review. Asmund has fallen in love with Math Antics, and we've finally chosen a curriculum--Math U See. We'll be ordering Gamma to begin in January. Wystan is doing well with basic addition and subtraction.

Misc
We've fallen behind in science. Wystan is learning ukulele from youtube right now, we start lessons in January. We continue to listen to various classical pieces. Soccer coop is done for the fall, we'll start up again next semester.
